Artistas e Artesãos: Monique
Monique or mokazaga, as she is artistically known, is dedicated to creating unique handcrafted pieces that reflect the rich ceramic tradition of the region. With a deep respect for traditional methods, she infuses each piece with a contemporary touch, resulting in works that are both functional and artistic.
Her artistic journey began in goldsmith, where she explored the precision of metalwork and meticulous forms. Later, she pursued a degree in Fine Arts at ESAD in Caldas da Rainha, expanding her exploration of different materials. But it was in ceramics that she found the perfect medium to unite technique and expression, leading her to specialize in various approaches such as pottery, raku, and saggar firing.
Her process is deeply connected to raw materials, often collecting clay directly from nature and developing her own glazes. Each piece is born from a balance between intuition and technique, becoming an extension of her artistic vision.
Beyond creating her own pieces, Monique shares her knowledge through workshops and private lessons, teaching different techniques and encouraging creative expression. Her studio is also a space for collaboration, where she accepts custom commissions, crafting unique pieces for those seeking something truly special.
More than just shaping clay, Monique sees ceramics as a dialogue between earth, fire, and human touch—an ever-evolving practice that bridges tradition and innovation. Through her work, she invites others to slow down, to feel the rhythm of craftsmanship, and to reconnect with the simple yet profound beauty of handmade objects.
Her work not only preserves local artisanal traditions but also inspires a new generation to explore the world of ceramics, celebrating the beauty of handmade creation and the deep connection between hands and earth.
